On June 29th, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced the 'Mukhyamantri Teerth Darshan Yojana,' a pilgrimage scheme designed for senior citizens of all religions. The scheme aims to assist elderly individuals who are unable to visit religious sites on their own.
Chief Minister Shinde stated, "The scheme titled 'Mukhyamantri Teerth Darshan Yojana' will be for the senior citizens of all religions." He made this announcement in the legislative assembly while responding to a calling attention motion by Shiv Sena MLA Pratap Sarnaik.
Under the new pilgrimage scheme, rules will be established to allow senior citizens from Maharashtra to undertake their pilgrimage journeys, regardless of their religion.
MLA Pratap Sarnaik suggested that the state government should initiate a scheme for senior citizens that includes pilgrimage sites from all religions. MLA Pratap Sarnaik highlighted that many senior citizens are unable to fulfill their dream of going on a pilgrimage due to financial constraints. Even if funds are not an issue, they often lack someone to accompany them or are unsure of how to organise the pilgrimage. He emphasised these points while advocating for the specific pilgrimage scheme from the Maharashtra government.
Eknath Shinde also committed to making Maharashtra drug-free as part of his efforts to empower the state's youth. "Wherever drugs are sold in the state, the work of demolishing all the shops, hotels, and stalls near schools and colleges where drugs are sold has begun," Shinde told ANI. He emphasised that, regardless of the scale of the business, anyone involved in drug dealing would be jailed.
In Maharashtra, Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena and Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) were in a close contest for 13 constituencies in the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections. The Eknath Shinde faction won 7 seats, while Shiv Sena (UBT) secured 6.
