Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared warm wishes for NASA astronaut Sunita Williams as she prepares to return from the International Space Station (ISS) after spending nine months on her mission.
"Even though you are thousands of miles away, you remain close to our hearts," PM Modi wrote in a private letter delivered by astronaut Mike Massimino, expressing the pride of 1.4 billion Indians. On March 18, 2025, Williams and fellow astronaut Butch Wilmore undocked from the ISS, starting their 17-hour journey back to Earth aboard SpaceX's Crew Dragon spacecraft. Their return is a major milestone, as their mission was originally planned to last just eight days. However, due to technical problems with the Boeing Starliner spacecraft, they had to stay in orbit longer.
PM Modi praised Williams' outstanding achievements in space exploration in his letter and extended an invitation to visit India after her arrival. “India is praying for your health and success,” he wrote, reaffirming the nation’s deep bond with its illustrious daughter. Williams expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for his kind gesture and India's support during her space mission. Meanwhile, NASA has worked closely with meteorologists to confirm favourable weather conditions for the Crew Dragon spacecraft's planned splashdown in the Atlantic Ocean, expected at around 3:27 AM IST on March 19.
The spacecraft will perform several important steps during its descent, such as detaching its trunk and releasing parachutes to ensure a safe landing. Williams' return is more than just a personal success; it highlights resilience in handling unexpected challenges during space travel. As she and Wilmore get ready to return, their journey home represents hope and inspiration for future astronauts. After they splash down, recovery teams will be there to safely retrieve them and bring them back to land.
