A clash erupted between ABVP and Left-backed student groups at JNU during the selection of election committee members at the School of Languages, resulting in injuries to several students. ABVP JNU attributed the attack to Left Union students and affirmed their commitment to advocating for student rights.
"ABVP JNU condemns this brutal attack on students and will always stand for the rights of students," stated ABVP JNU in a post on X. "Common students attending the SL School GBM at the School of Languages were brutally attacked with sharp objects by LEFTIST GOONS simply for requesting a fair chance to participate and vote in the school GBM. Some students sustained severe injuries."
ABVP President Umesh Chandra informed reporters that at least six individuals got injured during the altercation. Chandra stated, "The fight was initiated by them (AISA), and we have lodged a complaint." He further expressed concern over the selective release of videos, alleging that the footage failed to capture the entire sequence of events. Chandra claimed that the communists attacked from behind, preventing the recording of their assault.
He asserted, "They were all hitting us. In self-defense, we retaliated as security personnel did not intervene to assist us." Chandra highlighted that the issue arose following questioning of the EC process.
The Left-wing students accused the ABVP student wing of causing chaos and allegedly interfering with the selection process for the election committee.
According to a statement by the AISA, "The last day of the GBM at the School of Languages witnessed another round of violence by ABVP goons. Initially attempting to disrupt the selection process for the election committee, the ABVP resorted to physical violence against students when thwarted by JNU students. The ABVP goons were seen wielding rods and targeting and beating common students indiscriminately."
AISA further stated “that throughout the day, these individuals continued to disrupt the GBM process. They specifically targeted Muslim students and opposed whenever a Muslim student proposed their name for the upcoming election committee.
Additionally, they created a hostile environment at the school GBM premises by issuing threats to students and using sexist and casteist slurs."
The Left-wing students alleged that two senior Ph.D. scholars and a senior AISA activist were chased and beaten up by ABVP members.
According to their allegations, this incident of violence was not isolated, as another individual reportedly verbally abused students for singing the national anthem and also misbehaved with security officials at the GBM premises, as evidenced by multiple videos.
The student union said that the JNU community must stand up and rise against this violence and the politics of intimidation.
The student union demanded that the Vice-Chancellor's office acknowledge the acts of vandalism and violence committed by individuals associated with ABVP, whose identities are visible in online videos. They insisted that these perpetrators face punishment and be charged under relevant legal provisions for instigating such severe violence.
They demanded that these perpetrators be punished and booked under relevant sections for their unprecedented violence. Meanwhile, the Delhi Police confirmed receiving formal complaints from both sides."We are examining the complaints received from both parties. The Police have been informed about three individuals sustaining injuries," stated the Delhi Police.
