Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka have been sent to five days of judicial custody for allegedly trespassing at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar and violating bond conditions. They were detained along with Ajinkya Shinde during a protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The leaders face charges including bond violation and obstruction of a public official’s duty.
The three leaders were produced before a magistrate at Mandir Marg in Delhi around 8 am on Wednesday. CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke announced on X that Das and Ranka had been remanded to judicial custody for five days. He criticised the action and accused the government of suppressing dissent.
According to Delhi Police sources, Das and Ranka allegedly violated Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) again. The police said they breached the conditions of their bonds, prompting the court to remand them to judicial custody.
Police detained Shinde, Das and Ranka on Tuesday morning after they allegedly crossed barricades, entered Jantar Mantar and raised slogans demanding Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation. CJP legal team head Ratna Singh said in a post on X that Shinde had been released on a personal bond.
The three had earlier secured release after furnishing a bond of Rs 50,000 and promising to avoid involvement in breach-of-peace cases for one year. They now face charges of trespassing, bond violation and obstructing a public official’s duty.
Earlier, Singh wrote on X, "Delhi Police arrests Saurav Das, Ashutosh Ranka, and Ajinkya Shinde at Parliament Street Police Station in today's Jantar Mantar case. Trespass, bond violation, obstruction of public official's duty, etc."
Singh also alleged that the police did not allow the three leaders to meet their lawyers until late at night. She said the police brought them to Parliament Street Police Station in a private van at 3 am. Das and Ranka had signed a one-year peace bond after their detention during an earlier protest in Delhi on Saturday.
The arrests come amid protests by the CJP and other groups over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
On October 11, Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar issued an order designating Ramlila Maidan, Burari Ground and CBD Ground as protest venues. The order removed Jantar Mantar from the list of approved demonstration sites.
The CJP has opposed the move, arguing that shifting protests away from central Delhi would reduce their visibility and impact.
