Chief Justice of India Surya Kant has reportedly declined a request from Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and a delegation to meet him over allegations of “vote chori” and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, according to a CNN-News18 report citing top sources.
Sources said the CJI’s decision was conveyed to Gandhi through a detailed response. The report said the Chief Justice advised the delegation to approach the court by filing a petition instead of submitting a memorandum.
The sources added that the matter is already sub judice and should be addressed through judicial proceedings rather than administrative intervention.
The development comes ahead of the INDIA bloc’s planned march to the Supreme Court on Monday. Gandhi announced the march in a post on X, inviting young people, opposition parties and civil society groups to participate.
“Tomorrow, we will march to the Supreme Court as Indians, united beyond party, gender, caste, community and state," Gandhi said.
He urged people to join the protest, stating, “Youth, all opposition parties, civil society groups, all those who believe in democracy and stand by the Constitution of India, will walk with us."
Gandhi had planned to submit a memorandum to the Chief Justice outlining the opposition’s demands.
“We will submit a memorandum to the Chief Justice on behalf of the nation, demanding an end to vote chori, halting of SIR and the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar," he said.
The Congress leader also appealed for public participation, saying, “We will march together, with love, brotherhood and patriotism."
He concluded his appeal with “Daro mat", adding, “Tomorrow, all of India will march to the Supreme Court."
The proposed march follows an intensifying political dispute over electoral rolls and the Election Commission’s functioning. On October 9, an INDIA bloc delegation submitted a memorandum to President Droupadi Murmu over the issue.
Gandhi has repeatedly accused the Election Commission of facilitating what he calls “vote chori”. He has also demanded action over the SIR exercise and sought the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
