Chinese President Xi Jinping struck a positive and cooperative tone during a state banquet held for US President Donald Trump in Beijing on Thursday. Speaking at the event, Xi said that China’s vision of national rejuvenation and Trump’s “Make America Great Again” agenda could move forward together as both countries work toward a more stable relationship.
During his address, Xi described China-US ties as the most important bilateral relationship in the world today. He stressed that both nations have a responsibility to maintain healthy relations and avoid conflict. “The people of China and the United States are both great peoples,” Xi said. “Achieving the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and making America great again can go hand in hand. We can help each other succeed and advance the well-being of the whole world.”
Xi repeatedly focused on cooperation rather than rivalry throughout his speech. He said both countries benefit when they work together and face losses when tensions rise. “Our two countries should be partners rather than rivals,” Xi said, adding that mutual respect remained “key to whether the relationship can advance.”
He further said, “Both the countries can help each other succeed and advance the well-being of the whole world,” highlighting the importance of collaboration between the two global powers.
The Chinese President also revealed that he and Trump had earlier held detailed discussions on bilateral relations as well as several international issues. According to Xi, both leaders agreed on the need to build a stable and constructive relationship between the two countries. “President Trump and I also agreed to build a constructive China-US relationship of strategic stability to promote the steady, sound and sustainable development of China-US relations,” he said during the banquet.
Xi’s remarks came at a time when global attention remains fixed on relations between Beijing and Washington. Over the years, the two countries have witnessed tensions over trade, technology, security and geopolitical influence. However, the tone of Thursday’s banquet reflected an effort from both leaders to present a more cooperative outlook.
Responding warmly to Xi’s speech, Trump extended an invitation for the Chinese leader to visit the White House on September 24. The US President also spoke about the long historical connection between the American and Chinese people. He traced the relationship back to the early years of the United States.
“The relationship between the American and Chinese people goes back all the way back to America's founding. The first American consul to China, Samuel Shaw, arrived on the first American trading ship to reach these shores in 1784...Two and a half centuries later, that first connection has grown into one of the most consequential relationships in world history,” Trump said during his address.
Trump also pointed to gestures of admiration shown by China toward important figures in American history. He mentioned that Chinese admirers of former US President George Washington had once gifted a stone tablet in his honour for the Washington Monument.
“It bears the words of a Chinese official who called the great General and Statesman, a hero among men,” Trump said while speaking about the historical tribute.
The US President further noted that both countries shared common values despite their differences. He said the people of China and the United States value hard work, courage and achievement. Stressing the importance of unity between the two nations, Trump added, “The world is a special world with the two of us united and together.”
The banquet and exchange of speeches were closely watched internationally as they signalled a softer diplomatic tone between the two countries. Both Xi and Trump used the occasion to underline cooperation, stability and mutual growth rather than confrontation. Their remarks also reflected an attempt to project optimism about the future direction of China-US relations.
Even though challenges between the two countries remain, Thursday’s event showed both leaders publicly emphasising dialogue and strategic stability. Xi’s repeated references to partnership and mutual respect, along with Trump’s emphasis on shared history and common values, highlighted an effort to strengthen communication between Beijing and Washington.
