China has called for a "swift and fair investigation" into the Pahalgam terror attack and expressed support for its long-time ally, Pakistan, in safeguarding its sovereignty and security amid rising tensions with India. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi spoke with Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar by phone on Sunday, according to the state-run Xinhua news agency.
The source reported that Dar told Wang, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, about the continuing uncertainties between Pakistan and India “following a terrorist attack in the Kashmir region.” Wang stated that China is closely monitoring the situation, emphasising that fighting terrorism is a global responsibility. He also reiterated Beijing’s ongoing support for Pakistan's strong efforts in countering terrorism. The report mentioned Wang as expressing, “As an ironclad friend and an all-weather strategic cooperative partner, China fully understands Pakistan’s legitimate security concerns and supports Pakistan in safeguarding its sovereignty and security interests.” Wang also stated, “China advocates for a swift and fair investigation and believes that conflict does not serve the fundamental interests of either India or Pakistan, nor does it benefit regional peace and stability.” China expressed hope that both sides would show restraint, move closer to each other, and collaborate to reduce tensions, Wang said.
Dar highlighted that Pakistan has always fought terrorism steadfastly and opposes any actions that could worsen the situation, the report stated. He added that Pakistan is committed to handling the situation responsibly and will keep in touch with China and the international community to manage it effectively.
On April 23, China "strongly condemned" the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which resulted in the deaths of 26 people, mostly tourists.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun strongly disapproved of the attack, stating, "We strongly condemn the attack. China firmly opposes all forms of terrorism." He also offered condolences, saying, “We mourn for the lives lost and express sincere sympathies to the bereaved families and the injured.”
In a separate statement, China's Ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, condemned the attack. He wrote, "Shocked by the attack in Pahalgam and condemn (it)." He added, "Deep condolences for the victims and sincere sympathies to the injured and the bereaved families. Oppose terrorism of all forms."
