China sets up first high-altitude drone centre in Tibet for border surveillance, Himalayan Mission

China has established its first dedicated high-altitude drone research and development centre in Tibet to strengthen unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) operations in the Himalayan region. The new facility aims to improve drone capabilities for border surveillance, logistics, emergency response, ecological monitoring and scientific research. The project marks another step in China's efforts to expand the use of advanced drone technology in one of the world's most challenging environments.
The Plateau Drone Research and Development Application Centre officially began operations at Xizang University in Lhasa on July 3. According to Chinese state-run media, it is the country's first specialised platform created to develop, test and deploy drones designed for high-altitude conditions. The centre will focus on improving UAV performance in extreme environments while supporting both civilian and strategic operations across the Tibetan plateau.
Tibet offers a demanding environment for testing unmanned aircraft. The region sits at an average altitude of more than 4,000 metres. It has rugged mountains, low oxygen levels and rapidly changing weather conditions. These factors make drone operations more difficult than in lower-altitude areas. Chinese researchers believe such conditions provide an ideal location to test new technologies and improve the performance of drones designed for extreme terrain.
The research centre will work to address the technical challenges linked to operating drones at high altitudes. Engineers will study ways to improve flight stability, navigation and overall performance in difficult weather and thin air. The centre will also develop drone systems for several practical uses. These include ecological monitoring, border surveillance, transportation, geological surveys and emergency supply delivery in remote areas. Officials expect these developments to improve the efficiency of operations across the Himalayan region.
The project also supports China's wider strategy to expand its low-altitude economy and strengthen its position in advanced technology sectors. Chinese authorities have identified industries linked to artificial intelligence, autonomous systems and advanced drone technology as important areas for future growth. Sun Xianzhong, Party Secretary of Xizang University, said the institution would draw on its expertise in plateau sciences and newly introduced programmes in artificial intelligence and new energy engineering to support the initiative. The university has also introduced a specialised course on intelligent low-altitude drone applications in high-altitude regions. The programme aims to train students and researchers with the skills needed to support future drone development in challenging environments.
The establishment of the drone research centre comes at a time when technological competition between China and the United States continues to grow. Both countries are investing heavily in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, autonomous systems and advanced unmanned aircraft. High-altitude drone operations have become an important area of competition as governments look to improve surveillance, logistics and strategic capabilities in difficult terrain.
Chinese drone manufacturers have already demonstrated the practical use of unmanned systems in the Everest region. Since 2024, Nepal-based operator Airlift Technology has used heavy-lift drones produced by Chinese company DJI to transport mountaineering equipment on Mount Everest. These drones have also helped remove waste from higher camps on the mountain. Their use has reduced the physical risks faced by Sherpa climbers during difficult transport missions and clean-up operations.
The successful deployment of heavy-lift drones in the Everest region has highlighted the growing role of unmanned aircraft in high-altitude operations. These systems can transport supplies to locations that are difficult to reach on foot. They can also support rescue missions, environmental monitoring and scientific studies in remote mountain areas. Chinese researchers are expected to use the new facility to further improve these capabilities and expand their practical applications.
The Plateau Drone Research and Development Application Centre is expected to accelerate China's efforts to integrate drone technology into both civilian and military activities across the Tibetan Plateau.
