The Central government has extended the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958, to eight districts and 21 police stations across five districts of Nagaland. These areas have been declared as 'disturbed areas' for a period of six months starting from April 1 this year, unless withdrawn earlier.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) announced the extension of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) for the next six months in Dimapur, Niuland, Chumoukedima, Mon, Kiphire, Noklak, Phek, and Peren districts of Nagaland. This extension was communicated through a notification issued by the ministry.
Additionally, the AFSPA has been extended to cover the areas under the jurisdiction of 21 police stations across five districts of Nagaland. This extension includes six police stations in the Zunheboto and Mokokchung districts each, five police stations in Kohima, three police stations in Wokha, and the Yanglok police station in Longleng district. The Ministry of Home Affairs made this extension official through a notification.
These 21 police stations consist of Khuzama, Kohima North, Kohima South, Zubza, and Kezocha in Kohima district; Mangkolemba, Mokokchung-I, Longtho, Tuli, Longchem, and Anaki 'C' in Mokokchung district; Yanglok in Longleng district; Bhandari, Champang, and Ralan in Wokha district; and Ghatashi, Pughoboto, Satakha, Suruhuto, Zunheboto, and Aghunato in Zunheboto district. The Ministry of Home Affairs has included these stations in the extension of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958, in Nagaland.
The notification declares Dimapur, Niuland, Chumoukedima, Mon, Kiphire, Noklak, Phek, and Peren districts in Nagaland, along with specific areas falling under the jurisdiction of police stations in various districts, as 'disturbed area' under Section 3 of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958. The extension is effective from April 1, 2023, for a duration of six months, unless withdrawn earlier.
The Centre's decision to extend the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) in Nagaland follows a thorough review of the prevailing law and order situation in the state.
Earlier, exercising authority under Section 3 of the AFSPA, the Central Government had designated eight districts and 21 Police Stations across five other districts in Nagaland as 'disturbed areas' for a duration of six months starting from October 1, 2023.
Under the AFSPA, security forces are authorised to arrest individuals without a warrant, conduct searches of premises without a warrant, and undertake other specified actions.
