As per reports, the Union Ministry of Urban Development issued a notice on Wednesday to assume control over 123 properties that are under the purview of the Waqf Board, a list that notably includes Delhi's historic Jama Masjid. The Jama Masjid had been entrusted to the Waqf Board during the tenure of the Manmohan Singh government.
This development follows the ministry's decision in February of this year, wherein it determined to take over the management of 123 properties under the jurisdiction of the Waqf Board. These properties encompass not only mosques but also dargahs and graveyards. This decision was based on the findings of a two-member committee.
A communication dated February 8, from the deputy land and development officer to the board, conveyed the ministry's resolution to "absolve" the board of any responsibilities pertaining to the 123 Waqf properties. The Press Trust of India (PTI) had reported this development.
The Land and Development Office (L&DO), operating under the central ministry, revealed that the committee, headed by retired Justice S. P. Garg, had examined the issue of de-notified Waqf properties. As per the committee's report, it was highlighted that the Delhi Waqf Board had not submitted any representation or objection in regard to the matter.
This recent notice signifies a significant development in the management and control of these properties previously overseen by the Waqf Board.
"It is evident from the above facts that the Delhi Waqf Board does not have any stake in the listed properties, neither have they shown any interest in the properties nor filed any objections or claims. It is, therefore, decided to absolve Delhi Waqf Board from all matters pertaining to '123 Waqf Properties'," said the L&DO letter.
In May, the Delhi High Court issued an order permitting the Union government to conduct a physical inspection of 123 properties. The Delhi Waqf Board had laid claim to possession of these properties.
This ruling triggered a strong response from Aam Aadmi Party MLA and board chairman Amanatullah Khan. Khan had expressed that the decision had generated "widespread anxiety, fear, and resentment" within the Muslim community.
"Some people are spreading lies about it, the proof of this is in front of all of you. We will not allow anyone to occupy the properties of the Waqf Board," he had said in a tweet.
