On Monday, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved two important projects. The first is the construction of two hydropower projects in Arunachal Pradesh, costing Rs 3,689 crore. The second is the launch of the National Mission on Natural Farming, with a budget of Rs 2,481 crore.
In Shi Yomi District, Arunachal Pradesh, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw declared that the CCEA had approved Rs 1,750 crore for the 186 MW Tato-I Hydro Electric Project and Rs 1,939 crore for the 240 MW Heo Hydro Electric Project. These initiatives will help balance the national grid and enhance the state's electricity supply. The North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Ltd. (NEEPCO) and the Government of Arunachal Pradesh will establish joint venture entities to carry out the projects. In addition to Rs120.43 crore in Central Financial Assistance for the state's equity part, the central government would budget Rs 77.37 crore for roads, bridges, and connected transmission lines for the Tato-I project. Rs 127.28 crore will be allotted to infrastructure for the Heo project, while equity support will get Rs 130.43 crore.
Arunachal Pradesh will receive 12% of its power supply for free, along with an extra 1% for the Local Area Development Fund (LADF). This will lead to major improvements in the area's economy and society. A special fund of Rs 15 crore will be used to build important infrastructure like hospitals, schools, ITIs, markets, and playgrounds in the district. The Cabinet has approved the National Mission on Natural Farming to encourage sustainable farming practices among one crore farmers across India. With a budget of ₹2,481 crore, the mission aims to promote chemical-free farming, improve soil health, and provide healthier food for consumers.
During the media conference, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw declared, "Natural farming is a path-breaking decision to maintain soil quality and public health." The mission expands on successful trials carried out in 2022–2023 and 2019–20. There are currently 10 lakh hectares in India that are used for natural farming; the mission will further increase this undertaking.
