Union Minister Jitendra Singh has accused the political group Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) of receiving illegal foreign funding to fuel unrest in India. He alleged that the group’s founder, Abhijeet Dipke, and strategist Ashutosh Ranka have links with overseas financiers, including Pakistani political figures.
Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, Singh claimed that foreign-funded organisations and external networks were supporting the group. "There is enough evidence to show that they are being funded by unauthorised sources, by anti-India NGOs, and anti-India organisations within and outside the country. The foreign-funded NGOs, deep state operatives and anti-India forces are manufacturing this narrative. Abhijeet Dipke has been receiving funds from US-based donors, Ashutosh Ranka, paid by Pakistani politicians," Singh said.
BJP spokesperson Tuhin A Sinha also accused CJP of deliberately creating unrest in Delhi during the festive season through its protests. Speaking to NDTV, he said, "Over the last month, the CJP's tactics were all about manufacturing rebellion. It was all about manufacturing anarchy in the country's capital during the festive season. Obviously, there were mala fide motives. There was mala fide intent in it."
Sinha compared CJP's actions with those of the Congress, accusing both of targeting the judiciary. "Besides, whether it's the CJP or the Congress party, they seem to be at war with the judiciary this time: the way Rahul Gandhi marched to the Supreme Court right in the middle of a court hearing. You don't do that. You don't have a mock impeachment just before a very important hearing is due," Sinha told NDTV.
He further alleged that the protests aimed to damage India's international reputation and raise doubts about its democratic institutions. "All of these things clearly indicate that it is a very well-planned movement to ruin India's reputation locally and to cast aspersions about the robust functioning of democracy in the country…"
Meanwhile, the Delhi Police Crime Branch has summoned CJP spokespersons Saurav Das and Ranka for questioning. The investigation concerns alleged violations of prohibitory orders, unauthorised entry into Jantar Mantar and trespassing on another party's property.
On October 10, police detained Das and Ranka. They were released after signing peace bonds of Rs 50,000 each and promising not to engage in activities that could disturb public order for one year. However, within 72 hours, they allegedly violated the conditions. On October 13, they, along with CJP member Ajinkya Shinde, crossed police barricades and climbed the locked gates of Jantar Mantar. The site had already been removed from the list of designated protest locations. They raised slogans demanding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar's resignation over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.
Dipke launched the CJP website and social media accounts from the US in May, describing the initiative as satire. The Boston University public relations graduate was reportedly associated with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) between 2020 and 2023 and volunteered with its social media team.
The Opposition has rejected the Centre's allegations of foreign interference. Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge criticised Union Home Minister Amit Shah, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, the Intelligence Bureau and the Research and Analysis Wing for making claims without evidence.
"If the BJP, including the home minister, is saying that Congress is being funded by foreign agencies and they're not able to produce a shred of paper or a shred of evidence, this shows the competence level of Amit Shah, Jaishankar and R&AW. What is the IB doing? What is R&AW doing? On what basis are these comments being made?" Kharge said.
Supporting Rahul Gandhi's online poll challenging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to a public debate, Kharge also suggested that RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat moderate a discussion on the funding of the Congress, BJP and RSS.
