The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has sought to charge former Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav in the land-for-job scam. They got approval from the Ministry of Home Affairs and submitted it to the court, where Special CBI Judge Vishal Gogne noted the approval.
The CBI requested an additional 15 days to secure prosecution sanctions for over thirty other accused individuals and notified the court of this fact. The court scheduled the next hearing for October 15 and urged the agency to move quickly through the process.
The case involves claims that Lalu Prasad Yadav, while he was Railway Minister from 2004 to 2009, received land from job applicants or their families in return for giving them jobs in Group "D" positions in different railway zones. There were no public job notices or advertisements for these positions. The CBI's investigation revealed that senior officials in the West Central Railways helped make these appointments under Yadav's influence.
On June 7, the CBI filed a detailed charge sheet that named Lalu Prasad Yadav, his family members and 77 others, including 38 job candidates. The court had previously expressed displeasure over delays in the investigation and asked the CBI to submit its final charge sheet.
On October 4, 2023, Lalu Prasad Yadav, his wife Rabri Devi, and their son Tejashwi Yadav were granted bail. They were part of a second charge sheet filed by the CBI, which includes 17 people, including railway officials and private individuals.
On Tuesday, the Delhi High Court granted regular bail to businessman Amit Katyal, who was charged in a money-laundering case related to land-for-jobs. Justice Neena Bansal Krishna approved the bail on medical grounds after Katyal had been on temporary bail for 84 days.
