According to a report by Mint, lens manufacturer Carl Zeiss India is set to invest more than 250 million Euros in constructing its largest "vision" factory globally, located in Bengaluru, India. The land for this facility was acquired two years ago, and construction is scheduled to commence next month.
As per the latest reports, the construction of Carl Zeiss India's largest "vision" factory in Bangalore is projected to reach completion by October 2024.
According to Miguel Gonzalez Diaz, the managing director of the Zeiss group, the recently quoted report highlights that upon the facility's operationalization, the company will have the capacity to manufacture an impressive 260,000 lenses per day. This output is six times greater than the company's current production in the country.
In a notable development, the production at the new facility is set to be escalated gradually from the end of 2024 until 2026. The unit will not only focus on lens manufacturing but will also be involved in the production of metrology solutions, as reported.
As per the reports, Carl Zeiss India plans to expand its workforce in both production and research and development departments. Presently, the group dedicates 15 percent of its current sales towards research and development activities. With its current employment count of 1,400 individuals in India, the company aims to increase this number to approximately 2,000.
Carl Zeiss in India specializes in the manufacturing of spectacle blanks, which are unfinished lenses utilized in the production of eyeglasses, as well as prescription lenses. Notably, approximately three-fourths of the production is exported to Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, catering to international demand. The remaining portion is dedicated to meeting the domestic requirements within the country.
Miguel Gonzalez Diaz expressed confidence in India's capabilities, stating that the country possesses the skills and capacity to manufacture not only for its domestic market but also for foreign markets.
Diaz emphasized India's significant role in the global strategy of many companies, including Zeiss, as a key area for investment. He made these remarks while talking to news agency Mint.
