A Canadian police officer named Harinder Sohi was suspended after attending a pro-Khalistan protest outside a Hindu temple in Brampton, according to a report by CBC. Sohi, who held the rank of Sergeant with Peel Regional Police, was seen in a video holding a Khalistan flag, while other protesters chanted slogans critical of India.
The circulating video, which featured an off-duty officer actively taking part in the demonstration, was acknowledged by Peel Regional Police. According to CBC, Media Relations Officer Richard Chin stated, "This officer has since been suspended in accordance with the Community Safety and Policing Act." He added that the department is looking into what happened and will provide more information once the investigation is finished.
This development follows recent unrest over an attack on the Hindu Sabha temple in Brampton, reportedly by Khalistani supporters on Sunday. Protesters with Khalistani flags clashed with people at the temple and disrupted a consular event organised by the temple and the Indian Consulate. Videos on social media showed people fighting and hitting each other with flagpoles near the temple grounds. Prime Minister Narendra Modi took strong notice of the "deliberate attack" and expressed his expectation that the Justin Trudeau-led Canadian government would uphold the rule of law and ensure justice.
"I strongly condemn the deliberate attack on a Hindu temple in Canada. Equally appalling are the cowardly attempts to intimidate our diplomats. Such acts of violence will never weaken India's resolve,” said PM Modi in a post on X. He added, "We expect the Canadian government to ensure justice and uphold the rule of law". The Minister of External Affairs (MEA) stated that it remains "deeply concerned" about the safety and security of Indian citizens in Canada and that it anticipates that those who engage in violent behaviour will face consequences.
"We condemn the acts of violence perpetrated by extremists and separatists at the Hindu Sabha Temple in Brampton, Ontario yesterday. We call on the government of Canada to ensure that all places of worship are protected from such attacks," MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal remarked.
