Canadian police called protests by the Hindu community in Brampton over an attack on a temple as "unlawful" and warned that arrests could occur if the protesters did not leave the area. Peel Regional Police issued a public safety alert, noting that "weapons" were spotted among the demonstrators, who numbered around 5,000 Indo-Canadians, primarily Hindus, gathered outside the Hindu Sabha Temple on Monday.
Police issued a statement on X urging locals to avoid the protest near the Hindu Sabha temple."This is now an unlawful assembly, and we will be clearing the area. All individuals are to disperse immediately or face arrest," police said. Pro-Khalistani demonstrators clashed with temple worshippers on Sunday, disrupting a consular gathering that the Indian Consulate and temple authorities co-organised. Videos showed protesters brandishing Khalistan flags and fighting with Hindu community members with their fists.
The mob allegedly targeted women and children, according to the Hindu Canadian Foundation. A video has gone viral showing Canadian police reportedly assaulting a group of Hindu worshippers who were protesting against an attack. This incident sparked even more outrage. In another video, an officer is seen charging at a protester and hitting him multiple times. Three people have been taken into custody concerning the Brampton incident.
After a video of Canadian police officer Harinder Sohi taking part in a pro-Khalistan demonstration outside the Brampton temple went viral, the government also suspended him. Though he refrained from specifically denouncing the Khalistani sympathisers, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has denounced the incident and stated that "every Canadian has the right to practice their faith freely and safely."
Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly denounced the "deliberate attack" on the Hindu temple, demonstrating India's strong response to the incident. "Equally appalling are the cowardly attempts to intimidate our diplomats. Such acts of violence will never weaken India's resolve," said Modi in his first remarks since the downturn in India-Canada ties. "We expect the Canadian government to ensure justice and uphold the rule of law," PM Modi wrote on X.
Following the Canadian government's announcement that Indian diplomats were "persons of interest" in the investigation into the 2023 murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Nijjar, tensions between India and Canada sharply increased. In retaliation, India withdrew these diplomats and expelled six Canadian diplomats.
