In a shocking incident from Chennai’s Perambur area, six unidentified individuals allegedly hacked to death Bahujan Samaj Party state president Armstrong on Friday.
Initial reports suggested that a group of unidentified men, dressed as food delivery agents on motorcycles, attacked Armstrong with knives, leaving him fatally injured on the road. The crime occurred while Armstrong was speaking to his friends on the road near his residence in Perambur, northern Chennai at around 7.30 pm. He was rushed to a private hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. He had injuries on his head and neck. For a post-mortem examination, the politician's body was sent to Rajiv Gandhi General Hospital.
While the motive behind the murder remains unknown, Sembium police, within whose jurisdiction the incident occurred, are conducting an extensive search operation to apprehend the perpetrators. Chennai police stated that the additional chief of police, Asra Garg, will lead 10 special teams to investigate the motives behind the murder and apprehend the suspects.
Although the BSP does not have a political presence in Chennai, Amstrong, an advocate was a known Dalit voice. Armstrong, a resident of Perambur, had previously served as a councillor in the Chennai Corporation.
Former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and AIADMK General Secretary, Edappadi K Palaniswami, expressed his shock at the news of Armstrong's death on his official X account. He strongly condemned the Vidya DMK chief alleging that he pushed law and order to such a level that crimes are committed without fear of police, government, or the law.
"Deeply shocked by the news of the brutal murder of the State President of the Bahujan Samaj Party, Thiru Armstrong, in Chennai today. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family & the cadres of the Bahujan Samaj Party at this time," BJP Tamil Nadu chief Annamalai posted on X.
"Violence & brutality has no place in our society but has become a norm in TN in the last 3 years under the DMK regime. Having left the law & order of the State in shatters, Thiru @mkstalin should ask himself if he has the moral responsibility to continue as the CM of the State," he added.
"What can one say about the state of law and order under the DMK govt when the state president of a national party is murdered?" AIADMK leader Palaniswami asked.
BSP National President Mayawati took to her X account and called the murder ‘ deplorable and condemnable’.
