British media’s Hinduphobia, focus on cows, curry and caste leading to prejudice against Indians in UK: Survey

A survey conducted in the United Kingdom revealed that British media tends to depict Indians and Hindus through the lens of "Cows, curry, and caste." The study focused on British Indians and Hindus, revealing that a majority of individuals in this community experience bias, largely attributed to their misrepresentation in the UK media, which tends to adopt a "colonial" perspective when portraying them.

The results of a nationwide survey conducted by INSIGHT UK, an organization that "aims to address the concerns of the British Hindu and British Indian (BHI) communities," are startling. 2,061 people answered the survey, which was conducted between November 2022 and February 2023.

It found in the survey that 59 percent of survey participants reported that they had either witnessed prejudice or experienced it due to British media reports on Hindus and Hinduism.

About 70 percent of survey respondents said that this is a result of negative perceptions of India and Indians created by the British media.

A staggering 89 percent of survey participants expressed the view that the British media, "lacks impartiality when it comes to reporting on matters pertaining to the Hindu community." Additionally, an overwhelming 91 percent believed that the coverage of India by the media is not balanced.

The survey highlighted a notable distrust towards the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), with over 90 percent of respondents expressing that they perceive the BBC as the least reliable source of information regarding Hinduism and India.

Ranking second as the least reliable news source on these subjects is The Guardian. According to the survey report, these two publications also have the "highest number of complaints raised against them by BHI community members." Here BHI refers to British Hindu and British Indian (BHI) communities.

The figures are concerning, especially considering the significant presence of BHI members in the UK. According to the 2021 census, in England and Wales alone, there are 1.03 million Hindus and 1.86 million Indians.
