The Border Security Force (BSF) has asked its Bangladeshi counterpart, the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), to "prevent" citizens from illegally crossing into India following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government in August, the BSF stated on Friday.
The BSF also reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the integrity of the 4,096-km international boundary while ensuring the safety and security of the border population.
Since 12 August, the BSF and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have held 722 meetings at various levels. This was revealed following the meeting of a special committee appointed by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), held in Kolkata on Thursday.
The BSF stated that both border-guarding forces conducted 1,367 simultaneous coordinated patrols (SCP) in vulnerable sections along the border.
"During these border meetings, BGB officials have been apprised to prevent Bangladeshi nationals from illegally infiltrating into Indian territory. The BGB has assured to take all steps for the safety of Indian citizens and people belonging to minority communities in Bangladesh," it added.
According to the statement, officials from both forces are in continuous contact, sharing information on various operational matters in real time.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has set up a committee of senior officers, chaired by the additional director general (ADG) of the BSF's eastern command based in Kolkata. This committee is tasked with ensuring the "safety and security of Indian nationals, Hindus, and other minority communities" living in Bangladesh.
