Criticising a documentary released by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) that makes sensational claims about Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Indian government, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) strongly refuted its contents on Friday. The MEA asserted that the documentary is filled with blatant falsehoods, exhibits bias, and demonstrates unprofessional reporting, aiming to tarnish India's image.
"The documentary is riddled with blatant untruths, displays a clear bias, and reflects unprofessional reporting. It seems to pursue a specific agenda to malign India. We unequivocally oppose any efforts to condone, justify, or even glorify terrorism," stated MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal during the weekly briefing. "The foundation of this documentary is highly questionable," he further remarked.
The ABC documentary, titled The Story Behind India's Narendra Modi, makes unsupported claims that attempts were made to interfere with Australia's national security. Jaiswal's mention of terrorism is likely in response to the documentary's inclusion of a segment featuring Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a known Khalistani terrorist. Pannun is associated with the Khalistan movement, which advocates for a separate Sikh state and has been linked to various acts of terrorism.
The Indian government’s strong reaction underscores its sensitivity to international portrayals of its leaders and policies, especially those that could influence public perception and diplomatic relations. By highlighting figures like Pannun, the documentary touches on contentious issues related to terrorism and separatism, which are critical concerns for India.
This controversy reflects the ongoing tensions between India and external entities that critique its governance and national security strategies.
