According to state media, a distressing incident unfolded near the port of Derince in western Turkey, leaving at least 12 individuals injured due to an explosion that rocked the vicinity. Turkey's state-run Anadolu Agency reported that among the injured, three were in serious condition.
The explosion occurred at approximately 2:40 pm (11:40 GMT) near the Turkish Grain Board (TMO) silos, as stated by Seddar Yavuz, the governor of Kocaeli, where the port is situated. Preliminary assessments indicated that the explosion transpired due to the compression of wheat dust during the process of transferring wheat from a ship to the silo.
Governor Yavuz remarked, "We were told that it is technically possible that a blast could occur due to compression of wheat dust, but we are investigating every possible reason."
In response to the incident, prompt action was taken. Health, search and rescue, and fire brigade teams were swiftly dispatched to the area. Governor Yavuz emphasized, "We quickly rescued our friends from the scene and sent them to health institutions with ambulances as soon as possible."
An investigation was initiated by the police into the circumstances surrounding the explosion. Video clips circulated on social media platforms, capturing a massive cloud of smoke engulfing the area.
The Turkish Grain Board (TMO) revealed that the explosion inflicted damage on 13 silos and adjacent structures. In an official statement, the TMO asserted, "It is considered that the explosion may be due to dust compression and the cause will be clarified after detailed technical investigation."
Amidst this alarming situation, the Ministry of Transportation offered reassurance that no ships had incurred damage due to the explosion.
As the incident continues to unfold, authorities remain committed to conducting a comprehensive investigation to determine the exact cause of the explosion and ensure the safety and well-being of the affected individuals and the surrounding community.
