The Lok Sabha Secretariat announced that BJP MP PP Chaudhary has been named chairperson of the Joint Parliamentary Committee to review the bill for simultaneous elections.
The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) reviewing the 'One Nation, One Poll' bill now has 27 members from the Lok Sabha and 12 from the Rajya Sabha. This is an increase from the initially announced 21 members from the Lok Sabha and 10 from the Rajya Sabha. The strength increased after former Maharashtra Chief Minister and Shiv Sena UBT leader Uddhav Thackeray, along with a few other parties, highlighted that none of their members were included in the committee.
However, neither Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu's Telugu Desam Party nor Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's Janata Dal (United) have representatives on the committee, which the government intends to include all political parties. A new member from Shiv Sena UBT has now been included in the committee.
The committee includes former Union ministers Anurag Thakur, Parshottam Rupala and Manish Tewari, along with first-term MPs like Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Bansuri Swaraj and Sambit Patra. The committee has been given time to submit its report by the first day of the last week of the next Parliament session.
The JPC will decide whether it is possible to amend the Constitution to allow for simultaneous state and national elections. The planned modifications have been contested by opposition MPs, who say that they could erode the autonomy of regional parties and disproportionately benefit the ruling party by giving it undue control over state elections. However, the cabinet approved the bill last week.
