Just couple of days before the Maharashtra Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched an aggressive advertisement campaign targeting the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) and urging voters to "Say No to Congress."
The campaign spotlights key incidents from the Congress-led government’s tenure, including the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, the 2003 Mumbai serial blasts, the 7/11 train bombings, and the 2010 Pune blast. The BJP also references the Gowari massacre and the Palghar Sadhu lynching, questioning the government’s handling of these tragedies.
Corruption is another central theme in the BJP's campaign. Allegations of financial mismanagement under Congress rule are highlighted, including claims of black-marketing Remdesivir, a key anti-viral drug, by a Congress official during the COVID-19 pandemic. The BJP also raises concerns about corruption in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The advertisement features the phrase "Say No to Congress" alongside the MVA logo, with images of the 2007 Mumbai terror attacks in the background.
Responding to the campaign, Congress leader and All India Congress General Secretary Randeep Surjewala held a press conference on Sunday, criticising the BJP government as the "Bhagoda Jutao" (Runaway Shoe) company. Surjewala highlighted four key issues, calling them the "four M's": Mumbai mortgaged, Mahayuti’s guns and gundaraj (goondaism), Mahayuti’s Mehngai (inflation), and exploitation by the "Khoka Group vultures."
Surjewala accused the BJP of ties with industrialist Adani, stating, "Adani now owns Mumbai Airport and the electricity supply." He also pointed to controversies surrounding the Dharavi Development Project and condemned the BJP for rising crime rates in Mumbai, alleging 14 crimes are reported daily.
On inflation, Surjewala questioned financial decisions made under Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, including tenders and contracts awarded in the past year. He urged voters to consider these issues before heading to the polls.
With both parties intensifying their campaigns and trading accusations, the Maharashtra Assembly elections are expected to witness a heated battle.
