On Saturday, senior BJP leader V Muraleedharan urged the Kerala government to strictly enforce the newly passed law designed to control the entry of illegal migrants into the state.
Speaking to reporters, he highlighted that many illegal immigrants from Bangladesh are coming to Kerala, posing as guest workers. He emphasised that the law must be implemented without any exceptions. The Lok Sabha passed the Immigration and Foreigners Bill, 2025 on Thursday. Home Minister Amit Shah stated that India welcomes people coming for business, education, and investment. However, strict action will be taken against those who pose a security threat.
Muraleedharan also alleged that illegal immigrants, disguised as guest workers, are involved in drug trafficking in the state. "So, it is essential to implement the new law for the peaceful life and safety of ordinary people here," he said. The former union minister called the opposition front's stance to the issue "disappointing" and criticised the Congress-led UDF for it. A BJP leader claimed that when some Bangladeshi nationals were recently arrested in Aluva, Kochi, a friend of Leader of Opposition V D Satheesan came forward to defend them. He further added that a Congress mandalam vice president was later arrested in connection with the case. "The new bill is a crucial step towards eradicating drug abuse and terrorism."
He also urged the opposition Congress and the government CPI(M) to not undermine Kerala's efforts to combat the drug problem. Along with the unlawful transaction issue, the veteran leader accused the UDF of "trying to protect" Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and his daughter. He said that evidence of their "cooperative stand" on the matter came from the Kerala High Court's recent ruling in a related case.
On Friday, the High Court rejected a petition filed by Congress MLA Mathew Kuzhalnadan, who had requested an investigation into Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan. The plea was related to alleged financial dealings between Vijayan’s daughter’s now-closed IT company and a private mining firm.
