The BJP on Wednesday alleged that unidentified persons attacked its Kerala headquarters, Mararji Bhavan, by hurling bottles and stones at the building. The party condemned the incident and announced a statewide agitation on Thursday over the alleged attacks.
Earlier in the evening, the vehicle of BJP National Executive Committee member P K Krishnadas was allegedly attacked and vandalised in Neyyattinkara. Krishnadas had travelled to the area to inaugurate a protest when the incident took place.
The BJP said both incidents were serious attacks on democratic values. In a statement, the party said the attack on its state office took place "under the cover of darkness" and described it as a challenge to the basic values of democracy.
"Turning to violence when one is unable to confront someone politically is not befitting of democratic politics," the party said in a statement.
The BJP said it "strongly condemns" the attack on Krishnadas and the alleged attack on Mararji Bhavan. It also announced strong protests across Kerala condemning the incident.
The party said it would not give in to violence and called for a statewide agitation on Thursday over the alleged attack on Krishnadas' vehicle. The BJP's announcement came amid growing political tensions in Kerala.
The latest incidents followed a black-flag protest against Union Home Minister Amit Shah during his recent visit to Kollam. Political tensions have also increased after both the Congress and BJP accused each other's workers of attacking party members and offices.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Congress alleged that its offices had been attacked in the district. It also claimed that several of its local leaders had received threats from "BJP criminals".
The BJP rejected the allegations and made a counter-claim. It alleged that its Thiruvananthapuram South district president, Mookkampalamoodu Biju, was brutally attacked by Congress workers.
The political confrontation continued in Neyyattinkara, where Krishnadas' vehicle was allegedly attacked while he was attending a BJP protest programme. The party later announced the statewide agitation in response to the incident.
The BJP has called on its workers to stage protests across the state on Thursday. The party has maintained that political differences should not lead to violence and said it would continue its political activities despite the alleged attacks.
