Nine people surrendered in Egmore Metropolitan Magistrate's Court, in connection with the murder of BJP functionary PPG Shankar on Friday. Vallarpuram village panchayat leader and BJP SC/ST Wing state treasurer, PPG Shankar, was hacked to death by a mob on Thursday.
While PPG Shankar was travelling in his car in the wee hours near Nazarathpet in Poonamallee, four unidentified men hurled country-made bombs and the car lost control, according to police. Shankar escaped from the car and began running with the gang chasing him. They caught him and killed him using weapons, said police. Based on the information, the police reached the spot and started the investigation. They also registered a case and sent the body for autopsy. From preliminary investigations, police attributed the murder to previous enmity in business. Shankar had 15 criminal cases pending against him, said a police officer. He had also been detained under the stringent Goondas Act twice, the officer added.
Those who surrendered have been identified as Santhosh Kumar, Sarath, Jagan, Sanjeev, Guna, Anand, Santha Kumar, Dinesh, and Udaya Kumar.
Taking to social media, Tamil Nadu BJP chief Annamalai said, "I was very shocked to hear the news that Valarpuram Panchayat Council President and state treasurer of State Schedule Caste (SC) wing PPG Shankar has been hacked to death by anti-social elements."
It is clear from the daily crime incidents that law and order are not under control under the DMK regime, he said.
