After securing a strong foothold in Haryana by winning the Assembly elections a few months ago, the BJP's mayoral candidates have triumphed in nine out of the 10 municipal corporations, including Rohtak, which was once a stronghold of Congress leader Bhupinder Hooda. The Congress, which contested the civic polls using its own symbol for the first time, was unable to win any seats.
The BJP's mayoral candidates won in Ambala, Gurugram, Sonipat, Rohtak, Karnal, Faridabad, Panipat, Hisar, and Yamunanagar. In Manesar, independent candidate Inderjeet Yadav defeated BJP's Sunder Lal. In Ambala, BJP candidate Shailja Sachdeva secured the mayor's position, defeating her Congress rival Amisha Chawla by 20,487 votes. In Gurugram, BJP's Raj Rani claimed a massive victory, winning the mayoral seat by a margin of 1,79,485 votes. In Sonipat, senior BJP leader Rajiv Jain defeated Congress candidate Komal Dewan. Similarly, in Karnal, BJP's Renu Bala Gupta emerged victorious against Congress's Manoj Wadhwa. The biggest setback for Congress occurred in Rohtak, the stronghold of former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda. BJP's Ram Avtar won the mayoral seat there, defeating Congress's Surajmal Kiloi.
Despite this, in the 2024 Assembly elections, Congress maintained a stronghold in Rohtak and Jhajjar districts, winning seven out of the eight seats. Despite the results, Hooda remained confident, stating that the civic body election outcome would not significantly affect the Congress. "Earlier also, the municipal corporations were dominated by the BJP. It could be a setback if we lost the seat, but it was already not with us. The Congress must have gained in some areas, but I did not go anywhere during the elections. I don't think these results will have an impact," Hooda said. BJP leader and Haryana chief minister Nayab Saini declared that the "triple-engine" government would fulfil all of its commitments and strive for the general welfare of the citizens."The results clearly show the faith the people of Haryana have shown in the BJP. The people have voted because of the developmental work of the government. The Congress has stopped taking the democratic process lightly and that's why people have shown them the door," he said.
The elections held on March 2 witnessed limited involvement from regional parties such as INLD, AAP, and JJP, following their poor performance in the Assembly polls. The BJP performed strongly, particularly in urban areas like Gurugram, reaffirming its influence in the state's politics even after 10 years in power.
