The Bharatiya Janata Party registered a strong performance in the latest Assembly bypolls, securing major victories across multiple states. The party won key constituencies including Umreth in Gujarat, Koridang in Nagaland, and Dharmanagar in Tripura. In contrast, the Indian National Congress managed to secure only one seat, Bagalkote in Karnataka. Counting of votes in some constituencies is still underway.
In Tripura, BJP candidate Jahar Chakraborti emerged victorious from the Dharmanagar constituency. He defeated Communist Party of India (Marxist) candidate Amitabha Datta by a margin of 18,290 votes. The result reflects a strong lead for BJP in the region and highlights its continued influence in Tripura politics.
In Nagaland, BJP candidate Daochier I Imchen won the Koridang constituency. He defeated independent candidate Toshikaba by 3,123 votes. The win adds to BJP’s expanding presence in the northeastern states and shows its ability to compete effectively even in smaller constituencies.
Early trends from Maharashtra indicate that Sunetra Pawar is leading from the Baramati constituency. The seat has drawn attention due to its political significance and the circumstances under which the bypoll was held. The counting process for all bypoll seats began at 8 am under tight security arrangements to ensure a smooth and fair process.
The bypolls were conducted in several constituencies across states, including Umreth in Gujarat, Bagalkot and Davanagere South in Karnataka, Rahuri and Baramati in Maharashtra, Koridang in Nagaland, and Dharmanagar in Tripura. These elections were held following vacancies caused by the deaths of sitting MLAs or other unforeseen events.
In Maharashtra, Baramati recorded a voter turnout of 58.27 per cent. The seat is significant as Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar is one of the candidates. The bypoll in Baramati was necessitated after the death of Ajit Pawar, who was serving as Deputy Chief Minister and president of the Nationalist Congress Party. His death in a plane crash on January 28 led to a vacancy in the constituency.
Another constituency in Maharashtra, Rahuri, recorded a voter turnout of 56.20 per cent. The bypoll here was held following the death of BJP MLA Shivaji Kardile in October last year. His son, Akshay Kardile, is contesting the election as a BJP candidate, continuing the family’s political presence in the region.
In Karnataka, both constituencies that went to bypolls saw a voter turnout of over 60 per cent. Bagalkot recorded a turnout of 65.68 per cent, while Davanagere South saw 63.04 per cent participation. These bypolls were necessitated due to the deaths of senior Congress leaders H Y Meti from Bagalkot and Shamanur Shivashankarappa from Davanagere South. The Congress managed to win Bagalkot, marking its only victory in the current round of bypolls.
In Gujarat, the Umreth Assembly seat in Anand district recorded a voter turnout of 59.04 per cent. The bypoll was held after the death of sitting BJP MLA Govind Parmar last month. The contest in Umreth was mainly between BJP candidate Harshad Govindbhai Parmar and Congress candidate Bhrugurajsinh Chauhan, reflecting a direct political contest between the two major parties.
Nagaland’s Koridang constituency saw a high voter turnout, with 82.21 per cent of 22,382 registered voters casting their votes. A total of 18,400 votes were polled by the end of voting. Similarly, Tripura’s Dharmanagar constituency recorded an estimated voter turnout of 79.84 per cent, showing strong public participation in the electoral process.
Overall, the bypoll results highlight BJP’s strong electoral performance across different regions of the country. The party’s victories in key constituencies reinforce its political strength and organisational reach. Meanwhile, Congress’s limited success and the ongoing counting in some seats suggest that the final picture may still evolve, but the current trend clearly favours BJP.
