On Tuesday, hundreds of BJP employees, including those from the party's Minority Morcha, participated in a large-scale demonstration in the vicinity of former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's Ashoka Road home. The party sought action against Naresh Yadav, a Mehrauli MLA from the Aam Aadmi Party who was found guilty in a contentious Quran desecration case.
A Malerkotla court recently sentenced Yadav to two years in prison for his role in a 2016 incident where torn pages of the Quran were found scattered on a road in Malerkotla, Punjab. The desecration sparked violence, leading to an angry mob burning vehicles. Additional District and Sessions Judge Parminder Singh Grewal found Yadav and three others guilty of promoting enmity and engaging in criminal conspiracy. Delhi BJP President Virender Sachdeva who led the protest criticised the AAP leadership for not acting against Yadav more quickly.
“Muslims in Delhi are asking why Kejriwal is shielding Yadav despite his conviction. Why hasn’t he been expelled from the party or removed from the Vidhan Sabha?,” said Sachdeva in a conversation with India Today TV. Putting allegations on AAP of nurturing a "culture of criminality," Sachdeva remarked, “Incidents like these destroy the social fabric of our society. Kejriwal's governance has become synonymous with corruption and shielding criminals.” Additionally, he demanded more responsibility within the AAP and claimed that other leaders, including MLA Naresh Balyan, had connections to criminal activities. The BJP has warned it will intensify its protests if the AAP leadership does not take action against Yadav. Demonstrators were seen holding banners and chanting slogans, demanding Yadav's removal from both the AAP and the Delhi Assembly.
The Quran desecration case dates back to June 24, 2016, when torn pages of the holy book were found on a road in Malerkotla. This incident led to widespread unrest and several arrests, including Yadav. Although he was acquitted in 2021, the complainant, Mohammad Ashraf, appealed the decision. The court overturned the acquittal, resulting in the MLA’s conviction. In addition to imposing a fine of Rs 11,000, the court punished Yadav under Sections 295A (outraging religious sensibilities), 153A (promoting enmity), and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code.
