Mustafa Mundupara, leader of Sunni Yuvajana Sangam (SYS) stirred up a controversy in Kerala by expressing support for the concept of a 'separate Malabar state'. Speaking at a protest regarding inadequate school seats in Malabar, he remarked that one could understand if there was a call for a separate Malabar state.
He emphasised that residents of Southern Kerala and Malabar pay equal taxes and therefore deserve equitable access to facilities.
Mustafa Mundupara made remarks during a protest in Malappuram concerning the shortage of Class 11 seats. He stated that if there were demands for a separate Malabar state due to perceived injustices similar to those faced in southern Kerala, such sentiments should not be dismissed. Mundupara highlighted the equal taxation by residents of Malabar and southern Kerala as justification for equal facilities in the region.
He argued against labelling such demands as separatism, questioning the implications for the country if a Malabar state were to be established.
In response, the BJP criticised Mustafa Mundupara's speech, as well as Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, VD Satheesan, for their silence on the issue.
"Belief that the ban on the Popular Front (of India) has eliminated extremist forces in Kerala is mistaken," stated Kerala BJP chief K Surendran. He criticised SYS leader Mustafa Mundupara for advocating Kerala's division and accused the Congress and Communist parties of compromising national integrity for electoral gain.
Surendran asserted that these political entities pose significant obstacles to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's steadfast mission to eradicate separatist elements from India. He declared that the BJP would vigorously oppose any efforts to partition Kerala, accompanying his statement with a photograph of Mustafa Mundupara and his contentious remarks.
Meanwhile, widespread protests by various student organisations are ongoing in Kerala due to insufficient Class 11 seats in Malappuram.
The Malabar region, situated in northern Kerala, encompasses the districts of Kozhikode, Malappuram, Kannur, Palakkad, and neighbouring areas.
