The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) raised its criticism of former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in response to a Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report outlining significant spending on the renovation of his official mansion, commonly known as the "Sheesh Mahal."
According to the CAG report, renovation expenditures exceeded the initial estimate of ₹7.9 crore, reaching ₹33.66 crore. BJP spokesperson CR Kesavan stated that this spending occurred during the COVID-19 epidemic when many residents were experiencing financial difficulties.
According to Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva, the actual price might range from ₹75-80 crore due to extra charges not included in the 2022 report. Kesavan accused Kejriwal and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) of betraying public trust, stating, "Arvind Kejriwal has muffled the truth and has now degenerated into a discredited and dishonest 'Sheesh Mahal' man." He further alleged that the AAP government misused taxpayer money during a critical period.
With the upcoming Delhi assembly elections, the BJP is leveraging this issue to question AAP's governance and financial integrity. Kesavan expressed confidence that Delhi voters would reject AAP, asserting that the party has "derailed governance."
As per the CAG report, the renovations started in 2020 and featured luxury goods such as an 88-inch OLED TV worth Rs 28.9 lakh, ten additional OLED TVs with a total of Rs 43.9 lakh, a premium refrigerator priced at Rs 3.2 lakh, and a Jacuzzi, sauna, and spa facilities costing Rs 1.95 crore. The renovations also featured seven servants' quarters, which commanded an extra Rs 19.8 crore.
The BJP and the Congress have made corruption a central issue in the 2018 Delhi elections. Both parties have been accusing Kejriwal of squandering government funds at a critical moment when common men were grappling with resource crunch during the COVID outbreak.
