The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has criticised members of the Congress party for their absence during a crucial 2 AM discussion in the Lok Sabha regarding the imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur. The House adopted the Statutory Resolution confirming the decision through a voice vote in the early hours of Thursday.
BJP’s Amit Malviya Calls Out Congress for Avoiding Debate
BJP leader Amit Malviya took to social media platform X to denounce Congress members for failing to participate in the discussion. He accused them of avoiding the debate instead of engaging in a critical national issue.
"Parliament debating Manipur at 2 AM with the Home Minister and Defence Minister in Lok Sabha. Congress members should stay and participate in the discussion. Not run away!" Malviya wrote.
While members from various parties supported the resolution, they also criticised the central government for the situation in the northeastern state. However, some Congress MPs were reportedly absent from the session.
Opposition Supports Resolution but Demands Peace and Stability
During the debate, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor expressed his party’s support for the resolution while emphasising the need to restore peace and stability in Manipur.
"End insurgency, restore peace and stability, promote dialogue with each other, promote inclusivity," Tharoor stated, urging immediate action to bring normalcy back to the region.
Similarly, Sayani Ghosh of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) backed the resolution but stressed the importance of swiftly restoring peace in the conflict-hit state.
Amit Shah Defends Government’s Actions in Manipur
Responding to the debate, Union Home Minister Amit Shah defended the government's handling of the crisis. He assured the House that all necessary measures had been taken to stabilise the situation.
"There has been no violence in Manipur in the last four months. Talks are ongoing with both the Meitei and Kuki communities for a peaceful resolution," Shah stated.
While acknowledging that the state remains tense, he maintained that the situation is largely under control. "As long as people are still in camps, I will not claim the situation is fully satisfactory. However, the government is making every effort to restore peace in Manipur," he added, according to PTI.
Resolution Officially Adopted by Lok Sabha
The resolution titled ‘Consideration on the Proclamation issued by the President on the 13th February 2025 under Article 356 (1) of the Constitution in relation to the State of Manipur’ was officially passed by the Lok Sabha at 2 AM through a voice vote.
This decision marks a significant step in the government's approach to addressing the ongoing crisis in Manipur, as debates over governance and law enforcement in the state continue to spark political contention.
