Unlocking a new era of defense collaboration, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan reveals President Biden's powerful directive, clearing the path to deepen cooperation with India in the joint development and production of vital defense technologies. Sullivan's strategic engagements with top Indian leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, have ignited an unprecedented response, propelling tangible progress in the realm of defense cooperation. Together, they aim to forge an unbreakable bond, transcending barriers and fostering innovation on the frontlines of security.
"The President gave a directive to every element of the US government to remove unnecessary obstacles and barriers to deepening defence, trade and technology cooperation. He wants to make good on a long-standing promise made between the US and India that we would deepen our cooperation including co-production and co-development. Having co-production means that critical technologies are produced here in India," he said during a meeting with select media persons.
Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's upcoming visit to the US, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan hints at significant breakthroughs in bilateral cooperation. The much-anticipated announcements may include technology transfer and local production of GE 414 fighter jet engines. This collaborative endeavor marks a transformative milestone, enhancing defense capabilities and fostering a path of shared progress.
He added, "The particular issue of the GE engine is important in some respect, this is exquisite technology, it is important technology. But it's also relevant insofar as the progress we can make on the GE engine will help propel progress on other areas as well as we move forward.”
Amid discussions on enhancing maritime domain awareness, the senior official expressed optimism regarding meeting India's requirements. While specific details were not disclosed, the prospect of addressing these needs, potentially involving additional UAVs, has sparked positive conversations."We would like to contribute to the growth of semiconductor manufacturing in India. That's one area where we would like to make rapid progress and show results," he said.
Sullivan highlighted the expansion of cooperation in key areas such as 5G, 6G, Open RAN, and Artificial Intelligence. Emphasizing the significance of artificial intelligence, he expects it to be a focal point during the discussions between Prime Minister Modi and President Biden. Regarding China, Sullivan clarified that the US sees competition but aims to manage it responsibly, avoiding a downward spiral in bilateral relations.
"The President has always said intense competition requires intense diplomacy. We have to manage this relationship carefully so that things don't get out of control. And that was the spirit with which he approached his meeting with President Xi in Bali last year," Sullivan said.
Sullivan emphasized China's role in Asia and the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) during talks with NSA Ajit Doval. The discussions highlighted China's growing presence and long-term plans in the IOR.
