Amid the ongoing crisis in Bangladesh, US President Joe Biden held a meeting with Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Advisor to Bangladesh's interim government, on Tuesday during the 79th United Nations General Assembly in New York. An announcement from the Chief Advisor's Office stated that Biden conveyed the full support of the United States to the interim government in Bangladesh.
President Biden, congratulating Yunus on his appointment to the leadership of the interim government, expressed the hope of even further cooperation between the two countries and offered continued US support as Bangladesh moves forward with its new reform plans. In a statement released by the White House, the two leaders reaffirmed the "close partnership" that exists between Bangladesh and the United States and is based on strong people-to-people ties and common democratic values.
“President Biden expressed US government's full support for Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus and his government as they met on the margin of the UNGA,” Yunus on X wrote, summarising the main takeaways from the meeting. In addition, Yunus briefed Biden on the state of affairs in Bangladesh and discussed the student uprising against the "tyranny of the previous government." He went on to say that in order for his administration to prosper in rebuilding the nation, it would need United States cooperation.
The Chief Advisor of the government of Bangladesh also presented a copy of the book "The Art of Triumph" to Biden. The book contains images of the wall paintings created by the students amid the uprising.
On Tuesday, outside of the UN General Assembly session, Muhammad Yunus also had a meeting with Justin Trudeau, the prime minister of Canada. According to the release, the two leaders discussed strengthening ties between Bangladesh and Canada, expanding freedom, establishing institutions, and helping Bangladeshi youth during their brief meeting.
Trudeau praised Professor Yunus for taking on a significant role and stated that Canada is ready to help build institutions in Bangladesh.
