Gujarat welcomed Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay on Monday for a three-day visit, highlighting the robust diplomatic relations between India and Bhutan. This visit follows a recent high-level meeting between the foreign secretaries of the two nations.
Upon arrival, the delegation, including the King and Prime Minister, landed in Vadodara and proceeded to the Statue of Unity in Ektanagar, Narmada district. The State government noted the delegation’s surprise and admiration for the monumental structure dedicated to former Deputy Prime Minister Sardar Patel.
Dressed in traditional Bhutanese attire, the dignitaries were greeted by state protocol minister Jagdish Vishwakarma and senior officials. They received a detailed briefing on India’s independence struggle and Sardar Patel’s pivotal role in the country’s unification. King Wangchuck expressed his best wishes to India in the visitors' book.
The delegation also visited the Sardar Sarovar Dam, learning about its significance in addressing Gujarat’s water scarcity issues. Following their visit to the Statue of Unity, they travelled to Ahmedabad, where Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and senior officials welcomed them.
In a press release, the State government highlighted the growing economic ties between Gujarat and Bhutan. Exports from Gujarat to Bhutan have reached $21.98 million, comprising ceramic items, electrical machinery, marine products, pharmaceuticals, and plastic products. Since a Bhutanese delegation’s visit in 2014, exports have increased by 52% over the past five years. This growth reflects the broader trend of enhanced bilateral relations under Prime Minister Modi’s emphasis on strengthening ties with neighbouring countries.
Trade between India and Bhutan has flourished, with the total value rising from $484 million in 2014-15 to $1,606 million in 2022-23. This increase includes contributions from approximately 30 Indian companies active in sectors like banking, manufacturing, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and ITES in Bhutan.
During their visit, the Bhutanese delegation will also explore Mahatma Gandhi’s Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad, Kutch district, and GIFT city in Gandhinagar. This visit underscores the deepening bond and expanding economic collaboration between Gujarat, known as India’s Growth Engine, and Bhutan.
