In the South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, an 11-year-old girl's body was discovered in a canal. She had gone missing on Friday night. The girl was allegedly raped before her body was dumped into the canal, according to the girl's family and the villagers. The discovery of the girl's body in such a state has led to widespread protests in the district.
The girl went missing on her way to home from tuition classes. After being concerned about her missing, family members filed a complaint at a nearby police station. However, they alleged police have harassed them let alone receiving any sort of help from them. When the girl's body was found this morning, many locals came together to voice their outrage over what had happened. They believe that this tragic outcome was caused in part by the police's alleged failure to act promptly.
Several videos of villagers—mostly women—leading street demonstrations and calling for the accused to be held accountable have surfaced online. After the police failed to file the complaint in a timely manner, residents are seen encircling and confronting officials in another video. In another video, peasants can be seen fighting with police officers and throwing stones and sticks at a police station. The residents' rage also led them to smash bikes and other pieces of public property.
In an X post, BJP leader Amit Malviya condemned the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government over police failure in registering the complaint. "During Durga Puja, as West Bengal celebrates Devi Shakti, women and girls are unsafe. Unless Asuri Shaktis, at the helm of the State's affair, are not defeated, crimes against women will continue, unabated. Mamata Banerjee has to GO for women to be safe in Bengal," he wrote on X.
