In a noteworthy development, the public sector company BEML successfully conducted the test firing of its indigenous 1500 HP engine for military vehicles at its Mysuru plant. Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane inaugurated the test-firing, signifying a major milestone in India's pursuit of self-reliance in defense technologies.
The 1500 HP engine project marks a pivotal advancement in realising Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat. Giridhar Aramane underscored the project's significance, affirming that it signifies a substantial leap toward bolstering India's military capabilities on the global front. He stressed that the engine's development heralds a transformative stride, underscoring India's expertise in defense technologies.
The indigenous 1500 HP engine is equipped with cutting-edge technology, including electronic control with CRDi fuel injection system and self-air filter cleaning electronic warning control, ensuring optimal performance. Its high power-to-weight ratio allows for efficient operation in diverse environments, from high altitudes surpassing 5,000 meters to extreme temperatures ranging from sub-zero levels to scorching desert heat up to 55 degrees Celsius.
The project was organised into five significant milestones to guarantee punctual completion and compliance with quality benchmarks. Despite facing challenges such as the ramifications of COVID-19, the first firing of the 1500 HP prototype engine represents the achievement of Generation One, concentrating on technology stabilisation.
Production of the first generation of engines has started, with 20 units scheduled for further trials in the coming year. Upon success, these engines will be installed in the Indian Army's armoured vehicles. Generation Two will focus on producing engines for trials at Combat Vehicles Research & Development Establishment (CVRDE) and their integration into vehicles for user testing. The project is expected to conclude by mid-2025.
BEML's CMD, Shantanu Roy, emphasised that this milestone cements BEML's role as a significant contributor to defence manufacturing in India. He stressed the company's dedication to fulfilling the nation's defence requirements through this achievement.
During the event, Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane inaugurated the 'Wall of Fame' to honour BEML's team. It symbolises their contribution to enhancing defence capabilities through indigenous technological innovation. The ceremony was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Defence, industry partners, and BEML Ltd.
