Ever since India's independence, Communists in India have pursued double standards in all spheres of political and social spheres. There are ample instances to show that they have taken all possible steps to defame India while enjoying all privileges of being an Indian in a democratic socialist set up. It is hard to forget the era of 1960's when the pseudo socialist communist leaders of India openly supported the Chinese Army and remarked 'Chinese Chairman, Our Chairman'. In all these years, the communist party has become weaker, giving birth to Maoists in the name of economic deprivation. The recent episode with regard to expelling Rajya Sabha MP Ritabrata Banerjee has further exposed malpractices within the party fraternity and how they have simply fooled the people in the name of 'class struggle'. The Ritabrata Banerjee episode is a stark reminder to the fact why the CPIM has lost its ground forever even in red bastion like Bengal.
Interestingly, Ritabrata Banerjee has made some specific allegations against the dictatorial communist party. First and foremost, he has categorically mentioned the regional bias of CPIM Politburo members Prakash Karat and his wife Brinda Karat. He has specifically termed them 'anti-Bengali' and their personal jealousy in blocking general secretary Sitaram Yechury's return to the Rajya Sabha. He even pointed out that CPIM Politburo, the highest executive body of the communist outfit has Muslim Quota. According to him, on the virtue of the Muslim Quota, an inefficient people of the caliber of Mohammed Salim are there within the Politburo. He has acknowledged that CPIM Party doesn't have any democracy and power hungry people in the top brass are simply not ready to give any opportunity to the younger generation. In this regard, he has given his own example. Last February, Ritabrata Banerjee was under media scanner for using expensive items like Mont Blanc pen and Apple Watch, which were considered to be not adhering to 'communist' way of life. According to Ritabrata Banerjee, he was suspended just after mockery of an inquiry commission, headed by none other than Mohammed Salim.
Apart from all these, the young 'ex-communist' pointed out that the 'anti-Bengali' lobby of CPIM played spoil sport in Jyoti Basu's chances of becoming the Prime Minister of India. With few more years left as a Rajya Sabha MP, it remains to be seen whether he decided to look for a renewed political career with BJP or not. But his political career isn't without blemishes either. In fact, what Ritabrata Banerjee has said, is applicable for all the top-level leaders of CPIM, which has led to their subsequent downfall.
.
CPIM Party itself has taken a dangerous path at present. Down south, they are accused of violence against RSS supporters in Kerala and even instigating Islamist fundamentalists for political advantage. Pinarayi Vijayan has proved to be an inefficient leader and the party has lost its mass support which was at least there during Achyutanandan's era. In Tripura, Manik Sarkar's government is already facing flak for several complaints and mass exodus of Congress workers to BJP has been a milestone moment for state BJP in Tripura. In Bengal, where the left simply looted the state in the name of land reforms and subsequent industrialization, has been losing public support day by day. Interestingly, BJP has leapfrogged the left front to become the main opposition of TMC in the state.
One must not forget that the Ritabrata Banerjee episode isn't only about an individual, rather a collective expression. Time and again, communist leaders have lost their contact with the grass root level and thus the party has become over crowded with people who have personal money-making interests. Thus, Prakash Karat, an individual who has never been able to gather courage to compete in any club election, has been taking the bigger calls for the party in the last few years. In states like Bengal, Tripura, local people consider BJP to be a reliable political outfit than CPIM which is in complete shambles. In all probability, it would indeed be a smart move on part of Bengal BJP, if they don't accommodate opportunistic Ritabrata Banerjee, who already has ample allegations against him.
