The BCCI has confirmed the immediate suspension of the remaining season of the IPL 2024 in a release on Friday. The board did so after Indo-Pak tensions rose, following the terrorist attack in Pahalgam.
In the press release, the BCCI suspended the tournament for a week with immediate effect. On Thursday, the IPL 2025 match between PBKS and DC in Dharamshala was postponed halfway through because of technical problems.
This was happening when heavy shelling was ongoing in the border regions amidst heightened military tensions between India and Pakistan.
The BCCI made a decision on Friday, on advice from the government, on whether the tournament would be continued.
The tournament was suspended. The problem started during the PBKS vs DC match around 9:30 PM IST when one of the four floodlights at the stadium malfunctioned.
Officials had initially believed that it was a technical fault, but the players and umpires then retired from the field and proceeded to the dressing room. Security officials requested all spectators to clear the stadium.
In an official press release, BCCI Honorary Secretary Devajit Saikia said, “The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to suspend the remainder of the ongoing TATA IPL 2025 with immediate effect for one week. Further updates regarding the new schedule and venues of the tournament will be announced in due course after a comprehensive assessment of the situation in consultation with relevant authorities and stakeholders.”
Speaking to the Hindustan Times, a BCCI source said, “We have decided to indefinitely suspend the IPL. The players’ safety is our utmost priority. Hence, we decided to stop the tournament for now. We’ll decide later if and when the tournament can resume. Right now, national interest is of utmost importance.”
