Bangladeshi Hindus in Montreal gathered on Tuesday to protest in support of ISKCON Bangladesh, urging the Bangladeshi government to take stronger measures to protect minority communities amid rising unrest. The demonstration shed light on increasing concerns regarding the safety of minorities in the country.
Protesters chanted slogans advocating peace and justice, calling for an immediate end to violence targeting minorities. A member of the Bangladeshi diaspora participating in the rally highlighted the need for harmony, stating, "Peace and fraternity are our demands. We want an end to the violence against minorities."
One protester attributed the deteriorating situation to an alleged takeover of key institutions by Muslim fundamentalists after an August 5 coup d'état that brought an interim government to power. The individual claimed that the interim regime has fostered an increasingly hostile environment for minority communities.
Neil Obermann, a Canadian Conservative Party candidate who attended the rally, expressed his support for the protesters and their cause. “I’m here because hate is unacceptable,” he said. Obermann underscored the importance of standing united against intolerance, adding, "Unity against hate sends a powerful message of community strength."
Tensions have escalated following the arrest of spiritual leader Chinmoy Krishan Das on charges of sedition. Minority groups have accused the interim government of neglecting their safety and fostering an environment of fear and hostility, further intensifying the calls for international attention and intervention.
The Montreal rally reflected the growing concern among the Bangladeshi diaspora regarding minority rights and the urgent need for global advocacy to address the challenges faced by these vulnerable communities.
