A top Bangladeshi military official with strong Pakistani connections has been placed under surveillance for allegedly plotting to stage a coup in the army, according to a report by India Today. Army Chief Waker-Uz-Zaman issued the directive to replace him following the suspicious movements of Quarter Master General (QMG) Lieutenant General Faizur Rahman.
The action was taken when the Chief's secretariat received a complaint concerning meetings that were called without his knowledge by Lt Gen Faizur Rahman, a known Jamaat sympathiser. Sources indicated that these meetings with divisional commanders were aimed at gaining support against the acting Chief of the Bangladesh Army. However, he was unsuccessful in securing enough backing.
In the first week of March, Lt. Gen. Faizur Rahman convened a meeting of the key divisional commanders (GOCs). However, the top officials received a warning after the Army Chief's secretariat learned about the meeting. The top authorities then withdrew from the crucial meeting. In the first two months of 2025, Lt Gen Faizur Rahman had multiple meetings with Jamaat leaders and Pakistani diplomats. The Bangladesh Army Chief was alerted about these meetings, which led him to become more cautious and place Faizur Rahman under surveillance.
This situation arises as Bangladesh faces growing unrest, with an increase in violence, vandalism, and riots over the past few months. During recent protests, properties associated with former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's family were targeted, including the Dhaka residence of her father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Last month, Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman attributed the country's deteriorating law and order situation to ongoing political unrest. He also emphasised the importance of maintaining unity and discipline within the armed forces. "The anarchy we have witnessed is of our own making," the Army chief said at an event.
