India has stepped up surveillance along its border with Bangladesh after reports that Bangladesh has deployed Turkey-made drones near West Bengal. This action follows intelligence suggesting a rise in terrorist activity in the border areas, especially after the fall of Sheikh Hasina's Awami League government.
According to sources, the Army was confirming allegations that Bayraktar TB2 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) had been deployed near the Indian border. The 67th Army of Bangladesh uses these drones for reconnaissance, surveillance, and intelligence operations. India has acknowledged the strategic importance of placing such sophisticated drones in a critical area, despite Bangladesh's claim that the deployment is for defence. According to intelligence, extremist elements that were crushed under Hasina were regaining ground in areas near the Indian border. The smuggling networks and terrorist organisations were using Bangladesh's political unrest as an opportunity to invade India, according to the reports.
"After Hasina's ouster, the border areas have seen a surge in anti-India elements. The combination of political instability and advanced UAV deployments near Indian borders requires heightened vigilance," a senior intelligence officer told India Today. Bangladesh has improved its capacity to carry out surveillance and light strike operations since acquiring the Bayraktar TB2 drones earlier this year. Six out of the twelve drones that were ordered have been put into service, according to Defence Technology of Bangladesh (DTB).
Amid the turmoil in Bangladesh, the military is already on high alert and is closely monitoring the new drone deployments. In vulnerable areas, the Armed Forces can increase counter-drone operations and use drones like the Heron TP. "We are monitoring the situation closely and will take countermeasures as necessary to ensure the safety and security of our borders," said a top defence official. In order to monitor the situation in Bangladesh, India is also making use of intelligence-sharing systems and collaboration with international partners.
