As reported by Dhaka Tribune, the Bangladeshi government has recently given its approval to four transit routes for the transportation of goods to merchants in Tripura and other northeastern Indian states. This significant development comes as a result of the growing economic ties and cooperation between Bangladesh and India.
The approval of these transit routes is expected to facilitate smoother and more efficient trade between the two neighboring countries. It opens up new opportunities for merchants in Tripura and other northeastern Indian states to access markets in Bangladesh and beyond, fostering increased regional connectivity and economic growth.
The four approved transit routes are Chittagong Port-Akhaura-Agartala, Mongla Port-Akhaura-Agartala, Chittagong-Bibirbazar-Srimantapur, and Mongla Port-Bibirbazar-Srimantapur, according to Dhaka Tribune's report.
During a recent news conference, Santana Chakma, the Industries and Commerce Minister of Tripura, revealed that Bangladesh and India have reached an agreement to permit Indian traders to transport their goods through the ports of Chittagong and Mongla. This development is expected to significantly facilitate trade and foster economic cooperation between the two neighboring countries.
"India and Bangladesh have signed an agreement, allowing Indian traders to use Chittagong and Mongla ports in Bangladesh for transportation of goods. The Bangladesh government has notified the four routes for transhipment of goods by Tripura and other northeastern states," Chakma said during a press conference.
In addition, Minister Santana Chakma announced that Tripura has formulated plans to establish nine 'border haats' to facilitate bilateral trade at the local level.
In April of this year, a trilateral conference was convened in the northeastern state of Tripura, involving the participation of Bangladesh, India, and Japan. The event was organized by the research center "Asian Influence," which focuses on studies related to the Northeastern Indian region.
Based on the findings of a previous survey, Dhaka Tribune reported that the survey results emphasized the need for Bangladesh and India to collaborate in order to promote and facilitate trade between the two nations.
