A court in Bangladesh is expected to hear the bail plea of Chinmoy Krishna Das next week. He is the spokesperson of the Bangladesh Sammilit Sanatani Jagran Jote and a former ISKCON member.
Das has requested bail in the High Court in connection with a sedition case, where he is accused of insulting Bangladesh's national flag, according to his lawyer. Chinmoy's bail request was denied by a lower court in Chittagong earlier on January 2. His attorney told news agency ANI, "We have applied to the High Court on January 12 for Chinmoy's bail." "We have mentioned to the court for hearing on Monday (today),” he said.
The attorney claims that the court would consider the matter in accordance with the order of the cases that are now pending. He noted that the top court only hears cases on Sundays and Mondays, and that the hearing is anticipated to happen next week.
Das, a former leader of ISKCON, was arrested at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on November 25. The following day, a court in Chattogram sent him to jail after rejecting his bail petition. He was accused of sedition for allegedly showing disrespect to the country's flag. His arrest led to protests, with his followers demonstrating in Dhaka and other places. In Chattogram, the protests turned violent, resulting in the death of a lawyer.
