Rumors of a coup in Bangladesh are spreading rapidly on social media following recent political developments and the noticeable deployment of military personnel and security forces, particularly in Dhaka. However, neither Professor Muhammad Yunus nor Army Chief Waqar Uz Zaman has addressed these speculations, which have gained momentum over the past 24 hours.
General Wakar Uz Zaman is believed to be playing a key role in these developments as Bangladesh's interim leader, Md Yunus, continues to face protests. Reports about meetings within the Bangladesh Army have fueled speculation that the Army Chief is growing frustrated with the country's political situation. He has also warned about potential terrorist attacks and urged for greater security and vigilance across the nation. Over the weekend, General Zaman met with his top aides, sparking speculation about possible tension between the government and the army chief. Political analysts believe these meetings and recent comments from the ruling party suggest some friction. Sources say the Army Chief focused on security measures in response to growing extremism in the country. However, Bangladesh's Interim Home Secretary, Nasimul Haque Gani, dismissed rumors of an emergency declaration, calling them "gossip." Recently, reports surfaced in India about an attempted coup against the Army Chief by some of his own officers with pro-Pakistan leanings. However, for now, General Zaman appears to be in full control of the army.
The Army Chief has repeatedly pointed out the deteriorating law and order situation and the increasing security presence in Dhaka. Asaduzzaman Fuad, General Secretary of the student-led Aamar Bangladesh Party, has accused the Army Chief of collaborating with President Mohammed Shahbuddin to establish a new interim government. "You can see the Army Chief holding certain so-called meetings and indulging in a new conspiracy. To see how, under the President, a new interim government can be formed. This president is a slave dog of Sheikh Hasina. If you try and run the country with Shahabuddin, lakhs of Abu Syeds will lay down their lives and blow up the cantonment. Don't engage in any controversy with Bangladesh," said Mr Fuad.
Abu Syed, a student activist, was killed during pro-reform protests in July 2024, which erupted into violence in the country and forced the ousting of then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Rumors about Asaduzzaman Fuad's arrest have increased speculation about a possible military takeover to control hardline forces in the country. However, the AB Party has denied these arrest claims.
A video of the Army Chief's speech from last month has gone viral again, fueling rumors of a military coup. "Later you will say I did not warn you, so I am warning you. If you cannot forget your differences and work together, if you keep mudslinging at each other, fight each other and kill each other, the country's and this community's freedom will go in vain," General Zaman said in that speech. "I am telling you today, otherwise you will say that I did not warn you. I am warning all of you. I have no other intentions, I have only one intention. I want to take leave after placing the country and people in a good place. I have had enough for the last seven to eight months. We want to place the country and people in a good place and return to the barracks," the army chief asserted in a clip shared by news portals in Bangladesh.
