The military has reported that "some criminals" attacked an air force installation in the Cox's Bazar province of Bangladesh on Monday, killing at least one person. The victim, identified as Shihab Kabir, a 30-year-old local businessman, was shot dead, according to reports.
The Bangladesh Armed Forces' public relations branch, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), issued a brief statement saying, "Some criminals from Samity Para, adjacent to the Cox’s Bazar Air Force base, launched an attack on the Cox’s Bazar Air Force base. The Bangladesh Air Force is taking the necessary measures in this regard.” The attack occurred a few hours after a land dispute arose earlier in the day, leading to a confrontation between Air Force personnel and local residents.
The situation escalated into violence when locals started throwing stones, resulting in injuries on both sides. However, authorities have not disclosed the exact number of injured. Meanwhile, officials warned that the death toll could rise. According to medical authorities, the deceased was "brought dead" to Cox's Bazar District Sadar Hospital after being shot during the altercation. According to the sources, he had severe injuries to the back of his head.
Cox’s Bazar Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Salahuddin said an investigation will be carried out to find out the cause of the confrontation, and action will be taken against those responsible. Authorities have increased security in the area as they work to evaluate the situation and stop it from getting worse.
