On Wednesday, clashes broke out between two factions of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in the Shyamnagar upazila of Satkhira District, leaving at least 22 people injured, including police officers and security personnel. This occurred despite authorities imposing Section 144, according to the Dhaka Tribune.
The conflict took place in the Ismailpur area of Shyamnagar after tensions rose between the two groups. The clash happened after leaders of the newly formed Shyamnagar BNP committee organised a rally, which members of the dissolved committee tried to stop. To prevent further violence, the Upazila administration enforced Section 144 in the area. However, according to the Dhaka Tribune, a stick was hurled during the march headed for Shyamnagar town, which was led by Solaiman Kabir, the former acting general secretary of the Upazila BNP. This led to a confrontation between the two groups.
As reported by the Dhaka Tribune, during the march toward Shyamnagar town led by Solaiman Kabir, the former acting general secretary of the Upazila BNP, a stick was thrown. This incident triggered a clash between the two groups. The Dhaka Tribune reports that among the injured were Humayun Kabir, the officer in charge of the Shyamnagar police station; Saiful Islam, a security guard; and several BNP activists. His supporters marched in protest after being attacked on January 19 and 20, according to Solaiman Kabir. Awami League activists and the leaders of the disbanded committee, he claimed, attacked his group and injured several people. Kabir also called district BNP member secretary Abdul Alim "undesirable" in the upazila and accused him of encouraging the violence, according to the Dhaka Tribune.
According to the Dhaka Tribune, Ashik-e-Elahi Munna, the joint general secretary of the dissolved committee, accused Solaiman and his supporters of attempting to disrupt a 31-point meeting organised by the Chhatra Dal, the student wing of the BNP, in Shyamnagar. Munna alleged that following the orders of district BNP convener Iftikhar Ali, Solaiman and his group, with the help of Awami League supporters, attacked his house. The president of the disbanded Upazila BNP committee, Abdul Wahed, requested justice and an inquiry into the altercations.
