The historic Assamese burial site Charaideo Maidam is on the verge of becoming Northeast India's first cultural UNESCO World Heritage Site. This esteemed candidacy was revealed at the World Heritage Committee's 46th session, which took place in New Delhi.
Before, Manas National Park, a tiger reserve, and Kaziranga National Park, known for its one-horned rhinoceroses, were two of Northeast India's natural UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The nomination of Charaideo Maidam, which acknowledges Assam's rich cultural legacy, closes a big disparity.
The World Heritage Committee is now being hosted by India, which is a historic first. With the announcement of Charaideo Maidam's nomination during the opening ceremony on July 21, Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised the number of India's UNESCO World Heritage Sites to 43.
Charaideo Maidam, the ancient Ahom dynasty burial site, is situated in Assam's Charaideo district. Similar to Egypt's pyramids, these magnificent buildings hold priceless artifacts and the remains of Ahom's kings and nobility.
Following the first Ahom monarch, Chau-lung Siu-ka-pha, the Assamese royal burial custom at Charaideo persisted for more than 600 years. For the Ahom community, these Maidams are very symbolic of their rich history and culture, and they are dedicated to kings, queens, princes, and princesses.
Situated one hour's drive from Guwahati, the Charaideo Maidams of Assam are open from 10 am to 4 pm. Jorhat Airport is the closest airport, around 1.5 hours away. The nearest railway station is Simaluguri Junction, which is around 25 minutes away.
