In a major political development in Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has indicated that the BJP is open to welcoming Bhupen Borah, the former Assam Congress president, into the party. This statement came soon after Borah resigned from his post on Monday, citing neglect and lack of support from the Congress leadership.
Bhupen Borah’s resignation has created a strong impact in Assam’s political circles, especially because it comes at a crucial time when the state is moving closer to the next Assembly elections. His exit is being seen as a serious setback for the Congress, which is already facing internal challenges in the state.
In his resignation letter addressed to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Borah expressed disappointment over the way he was treated within the party. He stated that despite working hard and contributing to the party’s efforts, he was repeatedly ignored and sidelined. Borah also highlighted what he described as a growing bias in Congress, where leaders from ordinary backgrounds are not given enough importance.
Borah served as the Assam Congress chief from 2021 to 2025. During this period, he was considered one of the key leaders of the party in the state. However, his resignation suggests that there were serious internal disagreements and dissatisfaction with the party’s decision-making.
Reacting to the development, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma spoke to reporters and said that the BJP believes in inclusive politics and welcomes leaders from humble beginnings. He indirectly criticised the Congress by claiming that the party supports only those with elite backgrounds or political family connections.
Sarma also said he was ready to speak to Borah and added that Borah was the “last Hindu leader” in Congress who did not come from a political dynasty. He further stated that if Borah decides to join the BJP, the party is prepared to offer him a “safe seat” in the upcoming elections.
Meanwhile, Bhupen Borah has not clearly announced what his next political move will be. However, BJP’s public invitation has increased speculation that he may soon switch parties.
