In fulfillment of his statement, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has executed the conversion of 1,281 government and provincialized Madrasas across 31 districts in the state. These Madrasas have been transformed into general schools under the purview of the Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA).
Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu officially announced the transformation on the social media platform Twitter. The announcement highlighted that following the conversion of all government and provincialized Madrasas into general schools under SEBA, the Department of School Education Assam has issued a notification to rename 1,281 ME Madrasas to ME Schools.
The Assam Education Minister, Ranoj Pegu, has disclosed the comprehensive list of 1,281 schools whose names underwent a change. This action follows the conversion of government and provincialized Madrasas into general schools under SEBA, as announced earlier.
According to a notification dated December 4, 2023, and approved by the Government through E-file No. 392611, the nomenclature of Upper Primary Schools formerly known as 'M.E. Madrassa' under the Directorate of Elementary Education, Assam, has been changed to 'M.E. School' with immediate effect.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had previously declared the closure of 600 Madrasas during a rally in Karnataka in March of the same year. He expressed a preference for educational institutions over Islamic institutions, indicating his government's intention to close all Madrasas.
In January 2021, the Assam government enacted legislation facilitating the conversion of all government-run Madrasas in the state into regular or general schools under the state board. The Act aimed to abolish the Assam Madrassa Education (Provincialization) Act, 1995, and the Assam Madrassa Education (Provincialization of Services of Employees and Re-Organization of Madrassa Educational Institutions) Act, 2018.
According to 2021 data from the Assam Madrassa Teachers’ Association (AMTA), over 600 government-run Madrasas in Assam had enrolled approximately 1,40,000 students.
